Some things are never as good as you remember them being. Like Wagon Wheels (they're a bit sickly actually), long childhood summers (not actually that hot, and actually quite boring) and games which left you obsessed back in the day but actually if you replay them haven't aged well. The worry would be that Star Ocean falls into that category.

Set in the mid-2100s when the world is heading towards ecological armageddon, Fracture sees the US having literally been split in half by a polar ice cap melting. The east side, the Atlantic Alliance, relies on technology to survive, while the western Republic of Pacifica decides that genetic modification of its population is more important to survive this calamitous time.

In the same way that it has dominated TV screens over the last decade, WWE's wrestling products have also dominated gaming. If you want to kick some lycra clad butt then there was very little out there except the annual Smackdown vs Raw release.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
If you'd told me that I would ever have got so caught up in the story of a Sonic game that I felt genuinely sorry for the old hedgehog I would have laughed at you. But when you get BioWare (the company behind roleplaying classics Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect) turning their attentions to the blue spiked irritant himself, amazing things happen.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
You've got to feel a bit sorry for George Lucas. Having hit the jackpot with the original Star Wars trilogy and then Indiana Jones, pretty much anything he'd try to do afterwards was always going to have to be utterly brilliant to stop the moaning fanboys. Instead he gave us the Ewok movies, the prequels and then – my personal frothing at the mouth moment – The Clone Wars film. The Star Wars franchise is like a horse being flogged to within an inch of its life. But there is still life in the beast yet – at least if you're a gamer.

There are some games which I pick up with a heavy heart. While they may be brilliantly coded and exciting for their core demographic, the basic premise doesn't appeal so I play them grudgingly.

If the last few months are anything to go by then it would seem decent RPGs for handheld consoles are like buses – you wait around for ages and then loads come along at once.

THE Border Telegraph presents the sixth in a series of eight new weekly columns inspired by String Jam Club, which meets upstairs at the Salmon Inn, Galashiels, on the last Saturday of every month. It offers local musicians the opportunity to play alongside some of the country’s top performers on their own doorstep during the open-mic spot – hence the name. Here, our reporter, Ally McGilvray, gives teenage singer-songwriter David Alexander a sound-check following his appearance at the club…

I have a terrible terrible sense of direction. I have been known to get lost in people's houses. That's ordinary sized houses. There is just a small part of my mind which is incapable of comprehending (and retaining) where things are in relation to each other. Navigation is my Kryptonite if you will. It makes getting places rather frustrating at the best of times.
