We're Dressed to Kilt
By Border Telegraph Newsroom
THE Borders will be strutting its stuff on the catwalk in New York next week.
Tartan Week, an annual event to celebrate Scotland’s links with America, gets into full swing on Monday with the ‘Dressed To Kilt’ fashion show.
The event is described as “the cultural and social highlight” of the celebrations, and two Borders designers will be taking centre stage.
Amy Elliott, from Galashiels, and Gina Tebbut, from Selkirk, have designed kilts to be modelled along with three other entries from fellow students from Heriot-Watt University.
Heriot-Watt is the only university to take part in the event, and Amy and Gina can’t wait to see how their creations go down in the Big Apple.
Amy said: “It feels really good. I am from Galashiels, and it is often overlooked, so it is good to promote this area.
“It is not just people from Edinburgh or Glasgow, so I hope it puts Galashiels on the map a bit more.”
The kilts will be modelled by a variety of celebrity models, such as Alan Cumming, Ioan Gruffudd and Sir Stirling Moss. Sir Sean Connery and his wife will be among the judges.
Amy said: “I really hope it is someone that I know wearing it. To see anybody wearing your design is really good, but if it is someone famous then that is even better.”
The kilts were specially commissioned for the event, and were produced in collaboration with Lochcarron of Scotland.
And Gina’s kilt will bring the sights of the Borders direct to the catwalk, with pictures of local abbeys, bridges and buildings prominent in the design.
She said: “I am a right Borderer, and I love the architecture and the buildings here.
“I thought it would be nice to have those scenes in tartan in America. I get a lot of inspiration from where I live, and it has worked really well.”
Amy’s design may refer to a different country’s culture, but she is hoping it will still go down well with the judges.
She said: “I am doing a Russian theme for my degree show, so I took inspiration from that.
“The dolls go from bigger to smaller on the front of the kilt, and I have tried to tie it in with the colours. It is a bit quirky.”
