Goal machine in top form

Selkirk’s first warm-up of the season welcomed back former goal machine Craig Wilson to the starting line up.

And the 26-year-old fired home a quality double to prove he is ready for the East of Scotland Premier League.

Wilson partnered Craig Livingstone throughout the 04/05 season, but gave up on football after the team missed on goal difference to gain promotion.

His return to the squad is a big boost for Fraser Lothian’s team. The manager said: “You know what you will get from Craig. He runs himself into the ground and has a good eye for goal.”

Another with an eye for goal, Craig Livingstone, fired the Souters in front after 10 minutes. The 19-year-old picked up a poor clearance and danced round keeper Kevin Pringle to slot the ball home.

Jason Cockburn’s diving header skimmed round the post a minute later.

On 23-minutes Billy Brawley picked out Wilson with an inch-perfect pass, and the returning striker lobbed the keeper from 20 yards out.

If that goal was good, his next was better. Wilson turned his marker at the edge of the area and curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

Waverley offered little in the way of a goal threat throughout the first half.

And Livingstone, Cockburn and Craig Tyson all went close to extending the home side’s three-goal lead before the interval.

Lothian rung the changes at half time.

And it took debut boy Darren Munro only ten minutes to make his mark. The teenager broke away down the middle to slot the ball beneath Pringle.

Another debut player, Scott Dickson, almost made it five on the hour. The former Dundee United youth rose above the defence well, but his header was cleared off the line by Tony Craggs.

Brian Turnbull had more joy with his header at the other end, finding the net at the near post to pull one back for Hawick.

And the visitors grabbed a second on 85 minutes – Mark Deans nudging Sean Inglis’ cross over the line.

But it was Selkirk who had the last word. Livingstone flicked the ball over his marker’s head to turn and touch before firing low beneath the keeper.

The annual pre-season match for the Billy Pringle Memorial Trophy has become a competitive affair.

And Selkirk’s captain, Ian Potts, showed his delight after being presented with the trophy from the late Billy’s children, Jade and Liam.

Potts told the crowd: “Everyone knows what a great servant Billy was to both Selkirk and Hawick Waverley. It’s fitting that he is remembered every year with this game.

“Hawick have taken this trophy home with them for the last couple of seasons, so it’s good that it’s back where it belongs – in Selkirk.”
