Glass rumours false

SELKIRK GLASS won’t become a third car showroom.

Rumours circulating around the town suggested the popular tourist attraction, which is currently being rundown, was about to be taken over by the John Martin Group.

It already operates two showrooms, Dunedin and Belmont, in the town’s Dunsdalehaugh and it was believed they were in talks to acquire the Selkirk Glass premises.

But the group’s managing director has poured cold water over the reports.

And told the Border Telegraph he has no plans for further expansion in the town.

Selkirk Glass was put into administration two weeks ago with the loss of 34 jobs – following its parent company, Edinburgh Crystal, and sister firm, Caithness Glass.

A skeleton staff has remained on site to sell off the remaining stock during a closing down sale.

Administrators Deliotte & Touche confirmed there has been interest in both the business and premises, but wouldn’t reveal any further details.

A spokesman told us: “We are currently in talks with several interested parties who have come forward.

“We cannot comment any further at the moment.”

Local agencies have grouped together to offer support for the redundant workers.

Representatives from the Job Centre, Scottish Borders Council, Borders College and Careers Scotland have been on hand to offer help and advice.

David Gass, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise Borders, said: “It is always disappointing when a local company has to make redundancies.

“Selkirk Glass has been an important and valued employer in the Scottish Borders as well as a tourist attraction in its own right.

“Our primary focus at the moment is with the individuals who are affected.

“Advice has been offered to help them find their next job or access to training opportunities to help them retrain for a new career.”
