Brae takes the traffic strain

A NEW road is helping improve traffic flow in central Galashiels.

Local councillor Bill Lamb cut the ceremonial ribbon on Monday morning to mark the opening of the Station Brae road.

It replaces the crumbling rail bridge connection, which was demolished to allow major improvements to the town centre road system alongside retail development.

The road opening heralds the substantial completion of the first section of the Galashiels Inner Relief Road.

Connecting Melrose Road with the new roundabout at Station Brae, it will allow free flow of two-way traffic and will replace the temporary road put in place in November to support the opening of the new Currie Road and Gala Water Bridge.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from SBC’s Technical Services, the council-appointed Contractor Raynesway and the Galashiels Roads Consultation Group.

This occasion was particularly special for Councillor Lamb who will not be standing at the next election, but will be retiring from the Council after 35 years of service.

As the SBC’s longest-standing member, Councillor Lamb has held many committee positions at SBC, including chairman of Planning and Development, vice-chairman of Roads and Transportation (now known as Technical Services) and chairman of Building Control.

He has held positions on both the Education and Social Work committees. And Councillor Lamb is supporting the changes in Galashiels.

He said: “I am very pleased to have still been part of the council when the redevelopment work began in Galashiels 15 months ago and there has been a great deal of change in that time.

“I welcome the opening of this new road link, which will take a lot of strain off Tweed Road and will be very positive for the public, giving access to the town centre from Melrose Road.

“I believe the development of Galashiels will have a positive effect in bringing people to the town, which will, in turn, benefit the local community.”
