A name too far for village development
By Caitlin Smith
The name Cappella Maggiore was 'too adventurous'
THE Italian proved a little too much for some Earlston residents.
A new housing development named Cappella Maggiore in honour of their twin town, has been taken back to its Scottish roots.
Based fifty miles north of Venice in the province of Treviso, the Italian settlement had called a new square in the town ‘Earlston Piazza’.
So flattered were the local community council that they decided to return the accolade.
But following complaints from prospective homeowners the decision was taken to change the name to the slightly less exotic title, Station Brae.
Harry Cummings, Chair of the Earlston Twinning Committee and of the community council, told the Border Telegraph: “It was a bit of a spur of the moment decision.
“We decided to name the development Cappella Maggiore two years ago as a tribute to out Italian twin, but in hindsight it was the wrong decision.
“Not to mention a bit of a mouthful.
“Calling it Station Brae is more traditional but we did once have a station there, so we decided on it for historical reasons.”
In their promotional materials, the developers, Fjordhus Limited and Craigvar Construction, had called the thirteen-house cul-de-sac ‘Greenmeadows’, before it was given the Italian treatment in June 2005.
But earlier this year, people who had bought the houses approached the community council to request that the name be changed.
And while the developer supported ‘Greenmeadows’, the council decided that Station Brae would be more appropriate.
The decision was agreed at the recent Eildon Area Committee meeting.
“Maybe we were too adventurous with the name and Station Brae is a little bit more Scottish, “said Councillor Sandy Aitchison during the meeting.
And Mr Cummings added: “We still want to give a nod to our Italian counterparts, though I’ll think we’ll probably go for something like Cappella Road or Cappella Court this time around.”
