Hotel wins right to have marquee
COUNCILLORS decided this week that a Lauder Hotel would function better with a garden marquee.
Planning permission was granted to the owners of The Lodge at Carfraemill, which will allow them to erect the giant tent on their front lawn every year for the next decade.
But this comes with a number of conditions, following complaints about noise and smell from neighbours.
The Lodge attracts visitors from across Scotland and beyond.
Its popularity led proprietors Jim and Jo Sutherland - owners since 1997 – to initially apply for a marquee in June 2006.
This was given the go-ahead, but since then issues have arisen over noisy celebrating.
Members of the Eildon Area Committee agreed, after lengthy discussion, to grant permission, though a noise control mechanism will have to be constructed.
Councillor Sandy Aitchsion said: “This is not a town centre, this is a rural area and neighbours shouldn’t be expected to put up with this, especially at the weekend when they’re trying to relax.”
Councillor David Parker emphasised that the smell from the septic tank must be tackled, as it was currently unable to deal with additional load.
Owners have until the end of their existing contract in December this year to implement change otherwise the 10-year application would not be granted.
Councillor John Paton-Day said: “This is a popular hotel which draws people from across Scotland, and the Borders is desperately in need of function facilities.”
Councillor Aitchison added: “I am pleased that The Lodge has been granted permission if the measures to reduce noise and smell are adhered to.
“It has an excellent reputation and attracts income to the Borders.”
