Drivers face delays as roadworks set to start around Gala
By David Knox
Work on the A72 near Clovenfords will start on Monday.
DRIVERS are set for some mad March motoring around Galashiels over the next few weeks.
But the fortnight of closures and diversions will bring much safer roads.
Work on the A72 near Clovenfords will start on Monday morning.
And the entire road will be closed until next Thursday between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
The following week will see the A7 between Galashiels and Bowland Junction closed from Monday to Wednesday, March 10 to 12, between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
And on Sunday March 16 the A7 between Bowland and Stow will be closed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Roads boss at Scottish Borders Council Colin Ovens told the Border Telegraph: “This work comes on the back of similar work we did between Clovenfords and Peebles.”
“We will carry out a lot of improvement work on areas where it is required to reduce the number of accidents.
“We want to emphasise the areas where drivers should take more care.”
As well as cutting back vegetation and inserting cats-eyes, the roads crews will repaint markings, improve barriers, as well as patch and resurface areas.
Diversions around Selkirk and Cadonfoot will be in place from Monday for cars going west from Galashiels – as will east-bound traffic.
And during the A7 closures traffic will be diverted by the A68.
Buses will also follow diversion during the closures except on Sunday March 16, when they will be allowed through the roadworks.
Mr Ovens added: “We apologise for any inconvenience but this is vital safety work that needs to be carried out.”
Due Health and Safety reason road closures must be implemented.
