Melrose seven are coming to town

THERE is the Melrose Sevens, and then there are the Melrose seven.
The former, of course, is the dramatic rugby showdown, which will be celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
And the latter?
Well, they are a family of Melroses—seven of whom will be making the trek from the West of Scotland to the Borders this weekend to watch the rugby.
Aged between six and 75 years, the seven—father Robert, brothers Ronnie, Coin, Gordon and Muir, and Muir’s two sons Craig and Lewis—will be making the trip from Neilston, near East Renfrewshire.
Said Colin Melrose: “We were always interested in the area, and interested in rugby.
“My brother and I went down a few times to see the sevens.”
He added that his two nephews were also interested in the game, and had recently begun playing it at Glasgow High School.
“It’s the first time all of us have been,” he said, adding that it will be the first time Craig and Lewis will have seen them.
“We’re just down for the day,” he said. “We’ve got other things on the Sunday, unfortunately.”
“It’s always been a good time,” he said, adding that he was excited to see all the guest teams make an appearance this year.
“The interesting thing about Melrose is that the Sevens is more of an event with rugby thrown in,” he said.
“At some places it’s rugby with the event thrown in.”
And as for who to root for, Mr Melrose didn’t have to think twice.
“Melrose,” he said. “Always go for Melrose.”
