IT should be some comfort to Colin Montgomerie that, should golf not work out, there is always a future in tartan design.

The Scottish golfer, who married Scottish millionaire Gaynor Knowles on April 19, tied the knot while wearing a kilt made out of his very own tartan—made at nearby Lochcarron of Scotland in Selkirk.

Nicholas Child, from International Management Group Golf, who first approached Lochcarron with the design, said: “The idea itself was conceived by Colin.”

“He sat down with some of the guys at Lochcarron and IMG and put his own thoughts into the design.”

The tartan, which is predominately gray and black with a blue thread running through it, along with red tartan squares, has now been registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority and is an official tartan—named, appropriately, the Montgomerie tartan.

And wedding participants were sporting it on their kilts, ties, bowties and shawls.

“It’s pretty rare for somebody to do that,” Mr Child said.

“Because it’s registered, it’ll become a tartan and almost a brand associated with Colin.”

He added that the design might find its way onto Mr Montgomerie’s golf bag, but it was “still in its relative infancy at this stage.”
