Holidaymakers head for fun in the sun
By Ally McGilvray
SUNSEEKERS from the Borders are putting the summer blues behind them and jetting off to holiday hotspots around the world.
Despite concerns over the credit crunch, repeated fuel rises and local job losses, The Border Telegraph this week discovered travel agents in the region are busier than ever.
While holidaymakers are getting fewer Euros for their pound, flights to Turkey, America and other long haul destinations outwith the European Union are taking off.
And I took a trip to see the girls at the Co-operative Travel in Channel Street, Galashiels, to find some of the best deals around.
Manager Kirsti said: “Demand is still there as no-one likes the British weather.”
The local travel agents revealed Bulgaria and the Caribbean were among the hotspots for holidaymakers this year.
However, one party even booked a trip across America in a Cadillac.
Kirsti added: “The credit crunch and fuel supplements are scaring the nation but more people are just looking after the pennies.”
Co-operative Travel revealed its best deal at the moment is a break to Greece, flying from Newcastle on July 15, for seven nights bed and breakfast, for only £249pp.
Meanwhile, it was the same story up the road at Eildon Travel Worldchoice – who are offering an all-inclusive trip to Turkey for a fortnight, flying from Newcastle on July 10, for only £459pp.
And staff at Thomas Cook in Galashiels said they were so busy they couldn’t speak to us.
