CONTROVERSIAL plans to silence the clock on one of the best-kept war memorials in Scotland for the first time in 80 years has caused alarm bells to ring in the Borders.

As previously reported, Scottish Borders Council is preparing to slap a night-time curfew on the peel tower at the Burgh Chambers in Galashiels following a complaint by a bed and breakfast owner about the noise of the chimes.

It was built to honour the local men who died in World War One and has sounded every hour since 1928.

But now The Border Telegraph has launched a campaign to show the world weare Loud and Proud of our bells, and we are asking readers to sign our online petition to force the powers that be into a rethink.
