THE SSPCA are calling on animal lovers in the Borders to donate some time and help raise money for abandoned or abused pets as part of Scottish Animal Week next month.

Running from September 1-7, Scottish Animal Week is a hugely important time for the charity, as it is the only week in the year when the SSPCA is allowed to fundraise in public.

The SSPCA’s Scottish Borders Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Mellerstain cared for more than 200 abandoned and abused animals last year and relies entirely on public donations.

Centre manager Debbie Bottomley told us: “First of all we are looking for volounteers to help with collections during Scottish Animal Week. The SSPCA needs funds to rescue, care for and rehome animals.

“We are also looking for people who may be able to give up some time to help with animal care or maintenance within our centers. Anyone interested can volounteer as much or as little as they like. It’s entirely up to them.

“Volounteers are so vital to us that we couldn’t really operate without them. Any help we could get from local people would be fantastic.”

Michelle Grubb, head of fundraising at SSPCA, said: “As Scotland’s animal welfare charity, we cared for more than 12,000 animals last year.

"But to do this we need money and we need local support to help us raise that money, so anyone who can spare some time during Scottish Animal Week from 1-6 September to help us collect would be doing a great service to vulnerable animals in their area.”

To volounteer during Scottish Animal Week, contact Carol Dyer on 07921 409021 or log onto www.scottishspca.org.

Anyone interested in helping out at Mellerstain Rescue Centre can call Debbie for a chat on 01573 410 559.
