Councillor Riddell-Carre criticised for Newtown no-show
By Atholl Innes
A BORDERS councillor has hit back after she was accused of not fully representing the Newtown St Boswells community.
Councillor Carolyn Riddell-Carre has refused to attend any further meetings of Eildon and Newtown Community Council.
“I do not think that I want to say anymore on the matter,” Councillor Riddell-Carre said on Monday night.
“I have already made by position clear. It takes this for the village to get any publicity despite all that I have done for the community.”
Now the Council has issued its own statement.
Chairman George Luke told the Border Telegraph: “Her non-attendance just makes our core task of expressing community concerns to the local authority more difficult and, as a result, she is not fully representing Newtown as a councillor.
“This (non-attendance) would imply that she is unable to work with the present 10-elected members and will wait until the membership changes.
“I can live with the criticism that the Council is not well run, but I do take objection to the insinuation implied on the very hard-working members.”
Councillor Riddell-Carre has also fallen foul of Selkirk and District Community Council, particularly after she supported plans for the town’s former Post Office to be turned into a bookmakers — against the wishes of community councillors.
