Council review on hold
By Ally McGilvray
A review of the council's sports development unit is put on hold.
CONTROVERSIAL plans by the council to hand over the running of its museums, libraries and public halls to a not-for-profit trust have been put on hold amid concerns it could lead to the loss of some of the less profitable services.
Scottish Borders Council this week confirmed it has decided to postpone the public consultations on the community services element of the Transforming Children's Services (TCS) review.
Councillor Graham Garvie, Executive Member for Culture, Sports and Community Learning, said: “This is absolutely the right decision to make. TCS is a huge project that and it was proving difficult to provide the correct level of focus and scrutiny for this element with everything else that is going on.
“We now have time for further detailed evaluation of all the options, including reviewing the elements to be included in the project and preparation of a robust business case.”
But he added “We remain wholly committed to developing cost effective and creative solutions that will enable us to improve the future quality and uptake of these important services to the people of the Borders.”
Both staff and public sessions scheduled for the following dates have been postponed: 25 September - Burgh Hall, Peebles; 2 October - Volunteer Hall, Galashiels; 9 October - Tower Mill, Hawick.
Information on the rearranged dates for the public consultation will be issued in due course.
