Gala blaze 'under investigation'
By Alexa Brown
INVESTIGATIONS to establish the cause of a blaze which tore through a derelict building in Galashiels this morning (Friday) are underway.
Emergency crews were called to the fire in empty flats on Kirkbrae at around 6.30 a.m. It took three hours and a dozen firefighters to get the blaze under control.
Alan Horberry, Group Manager of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, told the Border Telegraph: “We don’t yet know how the fire started, it’s still under investigation.
"We do know it started on the ground floor and spread up to the first floor.
“The flats are empty, but our main concern was that there may have been people sleeping rough in the building.
"The smoke was very bad so our crews had to wear breathing apparatus to search the building. Thankfully, there was nobody in the flats.”
