Teen accused of joyriding with toddler in car

Selkirk Sheriff Court
A TEENAGER accused of stealing a car and going for a joyride with a toddler in the passenger seat appeared in court this week.
The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have taken the vehicle from Marigold Drive in Galashiels on July 22 – despite not being old enough to drive.
It is claimed he drove aggressively and at excessive speed through narrow residential streets while under the influence of alcohol and repeatedly drove on the wrong side of the road – and off it.
However, it is alleged that when police tried to stop him, the accused drove directly at officers’ vehicles – forcing them to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
It is also claimed he smashed into a parked car in Priorswood Walk, Melrose, and crashed into a wall in Melrose Road, Galashiels – damaging the car and injuring the one-year-old boy in the passenger seat – before the pursuit came to an end.
The teenager was charged with driving dangerously and a series of road traffic offences, including failing to stop for police, when he appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.
However, Sheriff Wendy Sheehan continued his case without plea until October 13.
