Gala power surge stops time
By Ally McGilvray
A FREAK power surge disconnected hundreds of homes and businesses in Galashiels from the electricity grid in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).
Scottish Power blamed a fault at a substation in the town – the third in as many months – for the problems.
A total of 500 customers were cut off for around half an hour and the bells at the town’s war memorial also stopped. However, others took a bit longer to get power restored.
A source said: “We couldn’t work without our computer systems which couldn’t be rebooted until the afternoon.”
Scottish Power apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
Meanwhile, Scottish Borders Council confirmed a decision is imminent on the fate of the bells at the war memorial in Galashiels following concerns from a nearby bed and breakfast owner who claimed they were keeping her guests awake at night.
