Cash plea
By Border Telegraph Sport
IT is costing Selkirk RFC £6000 to fly to Orkney to play their BT Cup third-round tie on Saturday.
The Philiphaugh club will receive a little support from the SRU, £1200, but that figure has remained static for about 10 years.
Now Selkirk has written to the Union asking for a review, and it looks as though their views will be taken on board.
“The issue was raised at a meeting of the Scottish Rugby Council last week, and it agreed to look into it,” said Selkirk secretary John Smail.
Meanwhile, the Souters will fly in and out of Orkney on Saturday as they bid to avoid a potential banana skin tie.
The plane leaves at 10.30 a.m. and will touch down in Orkney at 11.15. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. and the officials and players fly back out again at 5.30.
“We would have liked to have stayed longer, but cost was a significant factor,” said Mr Smail.
Selkirk will prepare as normal. “We are focussed on the game and looking forward to the trip.
“We have not had a game for two weeks and we will not be under-estimating the opposition,” he added.
All cup-ties are potential banana skins at this stage when all Premier 1, 2 ands 3 clubs have to travel.
Gala will be on the North Inch at Perthshire while Melrose travel to Greenock Wanderers.
Hawick head to RHV while Peebles are at Linlithgow.
Unlike the cup in football, there are not expected to be many surprises…but there could be the odd one.
