Townsend makes Steelers comeback
By Border Telegraph Sport
BORDER Reivers star Gregor Towsend will make his comeback from injury when plays for the Bone Steelers in the International Invitational sevens tournament in Dubai this week.
The event runs from tomorrow,Wednesday, to Friday and is being played at the same time as the IRB event, which Scotland will be competing in.
The Steelers are managed by Andy Nicol, the former Scotland captain and ex-Currie coach, who will be assisted in his management duties by England’s record cap holder Jason Leonard while Adedayo Adebayo, who was part of England’s IRB World Cup Sevens winning side at Murrayfield in 1993, will coach the squad.
Boroughmuir scrum-half Calum Cusiter will lead the side and he is joined by a mix of youth and experience in an exciting squad.
Scotland under-19 wing David McCall, one of the hottest prospects in Scottish rugby, will be keen to show off his pace in the heat of Dubai and the prospect of him linking up with Townsend is a mouth watering prospect.
Townsend was injured earlier in the season while playing for the Reivers against Llanelli Scarlets.
He was scheduled to make a comeback last Monday, but the game was ruled out due to frost.
Along with Townsend further experience is provided in the shape of ex-Scotland full back Derrick Lee, Iain Sinclair, Iain Fairley, Graeme Kiddie and Martin Waite.
The squad, who were runners-up in the plate during last year’s event, is completed by Chris Shaw, Rory McKay, and David Sutherland.
Townsend is a Patron of the Jonny Mitchell Trust and this year the Bone Steelers will make a donation to the trust which has been set up to cater for Jonny’s long term needs following the spinal injury he sustained earlier in the season.
