First half onslaught proved to be decisive
By Border Telegraph Sport
Greenock Wanderers 6, Melrose 50
MELROSE eventually emerged comfortable winners from their visit to Greenock although they were made to fight all the way by a courageous young home side.
The visitors were rudely awakened in the first minute when their hosts opened the scoring with a penalty by their impressive stand off Ant Devlin.
The lead, however, was shortlived with the Premier 1 men beginning to settle into their stride scoring four tries in quick succession through Wayne Mitchell, Karne Kaufana, Cammie Murray and David Whiteford.
A slight lull in the ’Rose scoring machine was interrupted by Mark Robertson going over for try number five to round off the first half. Devlin added a second penalty for the home side.
The standard of play dropped somewhat in the second half with a number of errors and indiscretions creeping into the game however with a 2- point advantage continued to pressurise their opponents resulting in further scores for Mitchell, Barrie Watson and replacement stand off Scott Wight.
James King landed four conversions with Wight adding the extra two points following his own try.
