OLYMPIC gold medallist Chris Hoy free-wheeled into Earlston yesterday to help the PE department get into gear.

The world record-breaking cyclist presented the high school with its prize of £1,000 worth of sports equipment after pupils took part in a recent eating survey.

The 29-year-old sprinter from Edinburgh was quick to give a packed assembly some tips on getting ahead in sport.

He said: “You have to enjoy what you do. I’ve always enjoyed sport – not just cycling – and I continue to enjoy it.”

Hundreds of pupils at Earlston High took part in the survey carried out by Quality Meat Scotland.

And it was one of a handful of schools across the country that scooped the £1,000 prize.

Headteacher Norman Roxburgh said: “We can’t all be the best in the world but we can aim there.”
