Aiming for national glory
By Border Telegraph Sport
GALA Wanderers, the in-form team of the semi-juniors in the Borders this season, will take to the national stage on Saturday night aiming to put the icing on a very sweet cake for the Netherdale side.
The Wanderers face Dunfermline in the final of the Lloyds TSB Youth tournament at Murrayfield (kick-off 6 p.m.) and look to become Scottish champions for the second time.
Wanderers reached the final with a win over Musselburgh in the semi-final last week at The Gytes, but hopes of an-all Borders final were quashed when Selkirk Youth Club went down 6-3 to Dunfermline at Pennypit Park.
Wanderers, who were crowned runaway champions of the Lochcarron Semi-Junior League, will not be taking the final for granted. “It will be a tough game,” said president for the past eight years, Colin Playfair.
“We have done well this season. I think the confidence has come with the winning mentality, but Dunfermline beat the Youth Club and it will be a difficult game for us.”
Wanderers will lose at least 15 players at the end of the season when they move out (because of age) of the semi-junior ranks. “So it would be nice to end with a win,” said Mr Playfair.
Wanderers will be hoping to add to the success of the 1999-2000 team and become Scottish champions for the second time.
