Victories at Murrayfield
By Border Telegraph Sport
IT was a winning weekend for Gala rugby with two national trophies heading down the A7 from Murrayfield to the town.
Gala under-15s kicked off the double on Friday night by defeating Robert Gordon’s College, from Aberdeen, 22-17 in the final of the Bell Lawrie Cup on the main pitch at the national stadium.
And 24 hours later, at the same venue, Gala Wanderers held high the Lloyds TSB Scotland Youth League Cup with a 27-20 victory against Dunfermline.
Ian Millar, coach of the under-15s, was delighted with the success.
“Our win, along with that of the Wanderers, has to be good for Gala rugby,” he said.
“I would like to thank everyone involved as well as the Peebles under-15 squad who travelled to the game to support us. It shows that the true spirit of the game is alive in the Borders.”
Colin Playfair, president of Wanderers, who just over a week earlier had been presented with the Lochcarron of Scotland Semi-Junior League, told the “Border Telegraph”: “It was a big achievement to win both cups. And with the under-15s also winning, it was a great weekend for rugby in the town.”
The future looks bright, too. “Gala are working with all the teams to keep the boys at Gala,” said Mr Playfair. “We are looking to see if they are working in the town or going to university and seeing where they are after school. There is a lot or work going on behind the scenes.”
To make it hat-trick of success, Gala defeated Berwick in their Premiership 2 match.
The club also revealed that Ian Millar had been appointed as its development officer.
