Alice is just champion

The Borders has a new national champion this week after 12 year-old Alice Haining won the Under-13 girls National Cross Country Title on Saturday.

Alice was taking part in the National Cross Country Championships at Callendar Park, Falkirk, and was running for her club, Gala Harriers.

She was cheered on round the tough 4km course by family and club mates.

The St Peter’s Primary School pupil ran a very tactically astute race, keeping out of trouble at the start and picking her way through the field of 110 runners, she made her move with 500 metres to go to pull away from the leaders and take an uncatchable lead and win by 30 metres.

Alice is the first ever National Cross-Country Champion in the Gala Harriers’ 103-year history.
