John revs up for a new season
By Ally McGilvray
John Dean revs up.
ADRENALIN-driven John Dean is on the fast-track to success.
The 16-year-old motorcycle fanatic, who works at BCG Bikes in Galashiels, is revving up for the return of the racing season this weekend.
He will make his debut riding in the 600-class after being crowned Scottish champion in the 125-class last year.
However, despite only racing mini-motos for fun a few years ago and competing against riders twice his age, the apprentice parts salesman has already been tipped to win more silverware this year.
Speaking to the Border Telegraph ahead of the first race in Durham on Saturday, John said: “This season I just want to get used to my bike and if I win a race brilliant but if not I will need to try harder next year.
“It was a great feeling to be crowned the Scottish champion after all the effort the team put in over the course of last season.
“This will be my first race on the 600s but I have been practising. They are so much better than the 125s – and a lot quicker.”
Racing at speeds of up to 170mph around circuits at the likes of Knockhill and East Fortune with only a pair of leathers and a helmet for protection, the Hawick teenager seems undaunted by the challenge ahead.
John said: “My dad’s mad about motorbikes and he got me my first bike when I was three so I’ve been around them all my life.
“When I go out on the track I get a real thrill and then when I step off the adrenalin is still rushing and I just want to be back out there again.
“I’ve crashed seven times but my worst injury is a wee scar on my arm after coming off the bike at 70mph.”
He added: “There will be one or two riders about my age doing what I’m doing, moving from the 125s to 600s, but most don’t attempt it until they are in their late 20s.”
John revealed the cost of competing is valued at hundreds of pounds every weekend and pointed out he wouldn’t be able to do it without the continued support of the local bike shop.
He is being kitted out by BCG Bikes – the Yamaha franchise in Channel Street, Galashiels - who have armed him with a new Yamaha R6 for the coming season.
However, they believe they are investing in one of the brightest young talents the sport has seen in recent years.
BCG Bikes manager Darryl Porter said: “I think he is an up-and-coming Casey Stoner or Steve Hislop.
“I’ve watched him ride and he can compete with the best of them.
“John started off working at the bike shop as a Saturday job and then once he was old enough I took him on full-time.
“Motorcycle racing is a dangerous high-adrenalin sport and he’s moved up a class this year but we’re backing him all the way.”
