HEARTS forward Andrew Driver has kicked-off a new football programme for children at schools in the Borders.

The Bank of Scotland Soccer One scheme was launched at Selkirk High School last week.

It is aimed at encouraging more boys and girls to take up the sport in an area dominated by rugby.

The new programme, delivered by qualified Scottish FA coaches, offers first year pupils two hours of football training and coaching, as well as regular matches in a league format, every week.

Councillor Graham Garvie, Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Member for Sport, Health and Physical Education, said: “This is a fantastic initiative.

“The demand for football in the Borders is now at its highest thanks to the great teamwork and strong partnership working between SBC, the SFA, Bank of Scotland and the Scottish Schools FA.

“This partnership has given us the chance to drive football throughout all our schools and encourage as many youngsters as possible, no matter what their age, ability or gender the chance to enjoy the sport.”

The programme is being funded by money seized from criminals in a bid to make a difference to the lives of young people across Scotland.

SFA Youth Development Officer for the Scottish Borders, Dougie Anderson, added: “It’s great to see Bank of Scotland Soccer One being launched across schools in the Borders area.

“There has never previously been a structured football programme of training and games for the school kids and this will provide them with the opportunity to develop their skills and play football on a regular basis.

“With all nine local schools involved, the Bank of Scotland Soccer One programme is sure to benefit hundreds of children and perhaps even produce some stars of the future.”
