Falcons' Borders' raid
By Atholl Innes
NEWCASTLE Falcons plan a swoop back into the Borders this summer.
The Border Telegraph can reveal that the Falcons want to hold junior coaching sessions and an adult touch rugby competition.
And the weekend could end with a challenge match, which could become an annual event, between a Falcons XV and the Border League.
It is understood that informal talks have taken place between the Falcons and the Borders clubs.
And we know that the whole plan will be discussed by the Border League when it meets next week.
“There is nothing definite. It has not been discussed,” said League president John Davidson, of Jed-Forest.
There are proposals for junior coaching, club coaching and marketing as well as the touch rugby festival.
A Falcons spokesman told me: “I can categorically state that this is nothing to do with getting players.
“It is about building relations on a community base as we do with Cumbria and North-East England.
“We will bring the top players to the Borders to coach the youngsters. We will do all the marketing, hopefully raise our profile, but importantly we will pay for it all.
“If it is successful, we would like to build on it. It will not happen overnight, it will take time,” he added.
