Borders' new threat to cup tournament

THE Border League meets tonight at Netherdale with clubs poised to pull out of the National Cup next season.

A year ago, the clubs pulled back from the brink of a similar decision that would have a huge impact on the competition.

But faced with rising travel costs, poor gates, and no prize-money – as well as a threat to the sevens due to cup dates in April – clubs will now give serious thought to their own future in the tournament.

“It will be up to the clubs themselves,” said League secretary Ally Forsyth.

“It is hard to see what decision will be made, but we will be looking at the implications of the fixture list following the decision at the SRU agm to continue with the cup.

“But a final decision will need to be made on Wednesday.”

After their success last season, it is known that Melrose will support a move to play in the cup. But Hawick, who might have pulled out if they had drawn Orkney (away) last season, may lead a campaign to pull the plug.

And instead, opt for a local cup alongside the Border League – matches which will draw bigger crowds and reap financial rewards.

The format for next season’s Border League, which will include Haddington for the first time, will also be finalised tonight dependent on the clubs’ decision on the National Cup.
