BOWDEN hockey player Rosanna Innes led a proud but frustrated national Under 21 side home from Prague on Sunday after the team narrowly missed out on gold to France in the Under 21 European Trophy Tournament.

The 20-year-old captain was pleased with the performances her team had put in throughout the week, with comfortable wins over the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Russia in the early stages of the competition.

A 4 – 1 triumph over Poland in the semi-final secured the Scots’ position as tournament favourites and qualified them for promotion to Championship level.

But, finals day on Saturday brought torrential rain to the usually warm city and both teams struggled on an increasingly water logged pitch.

And in the 54th minute an intercepted Scottish pass sealed the team’s fate, when France knocked in the only goal of the game.

Rosanna told the Border Telegraph: “The final result was really disappointing, the conditions were bad and we just couldn’t manage to secure a goal.

“But our group games were great and we’re very pleased about securing promotion. We have a fantastic squad and great management and the whole tour was a brilliant experience.

“I’d like to thanks JS Crawford and Lochcarron for their tour sponsorship.”
