Curtain comes down on Borders athletics season
By David Knox
MOREBATTLE hosts the finale to this season’s Border Athletics circuit.
And around 50 top sprinters will bid to end the summer on a high.
Scotland’s Under 23 champion Craig Fleming (scr) heads a quality field in the 110 metres.
But the 21-year-old from Glasgow faces Hawick and Peebles winner Glyn
Davies (7) and Jedburgh champion Colin Bruce (11) and that’s just in the opening heat.
The village showpiece has also attracted British veteran champion Neil Armstrong (11), Tweedbank winner Peter Denholm (7) and Kelso champion Andrew Hogarth (11).
Selkirk’s Geoff Keen (9) makes a rare appearance on the Borders circuit this season and could prove a real danger.
More than 70 youths will converge on the village field hoping to claim first in the two age-group 90 metres races.
Amongst the local charge are Galashiels runners Johnny Berry (15.5), Jo Marr (17) and Laura Robertson (12.5), and Selkirk trio Ewan Brownlee (7.5), Craig Bruce (16.5) and Alan Smith (5).
Almost 30 youngsters line up for the youths’ 800 metres with Lasswade’s Ross Matheson (scr) facing tough opposition from Gala Harrier Rowan Marr (105), Selkirk trio Iain Douglas (20), Jay Myatt (100) and Skye Shiell (140), Earlston’s Dan Purves (50) and Hawick’s Kyle Potts (145).
There may only be 16 runners in the senior mile but finding a winner is just as difficult with Selkirk champion John Thomson (80) facing in-form Langholm winner Daryl Hastie (scr), Borders schools champion Jonathon Wolf (60), last week’s 1600 metres winner at Tweedbank John Archibald (75) from Glasgow, and Hawick trio Reece Taylor (70), Stewart Fraser (55) and Alec Corbett (180).
Morebattle Border Games start at The Tofts at 1.30pm.
