GALA Fairydean co-manager Derek Hancock was left fuming at the referee after watching his side suffer a humiliating defeat in their first game of the season at home to new-boys Gretna.

The East of Scotland League Division One promotion hopefuls were outplayed for much of the match by the former Scottish Premier League club, who were cheered on by scores of travelling supporters under the floodlights at Netherdale on Wednesday night.

They lost two goals either side of the interval, including two in two minutes midway through the first half, amid a comedy of errors, to record one of their worst starts to a new campaign for several seasons.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph after the final whistle, Hancock – who was banished from the touchline following a bust-up with the match official – said: “I was impressed by Gretna but not impressed by the referee.

“We started not bad and maybe if we had taken our chances it would have been a different game.”

But he added: “We’ll just have to pick ourselves up and start again.”
