Selkirk will be 'up for the cup' says manager
By David Knox
FORMER Scottish Cup finalists Gretna arrive at Yarrow Park this week hoping to wrestle the Image Printers crown from Selkirk.
The Anvils may now be a new-look young team since going into liquidation.
But under the guidance of boss Stuart Rome they remain unbeaten since joining the East of Scotland leagues in the summer.
Selkirk won the Image Printers Cup last season – their first silverware for 30 years – and manager Paul Brownlee won’t be giving up the trophy without a fight. He told the Border Telegraph: “I saw Gretna earlier this season and was impressed – they are a young side but look very fast and very dangerous.
“They will be coming expecting to win but if we can produce the same workrate and determination that we did against Hawick then it will be difficult for them.
“We all know it will be hard but we will defend our cup and we’d love to get to another final.”
With only a week to go until the Scottish Cup first round clash with Coldstream Brownlee will be missing the Gretna game to watch the Home Park side face Spartans.
And he has left clear instructions to his players.
The manager added: “I don’t want anyone picking up silly bookings. The biggest game of our season is next week and I want a full squad.”
Bryan Templeton and Derek Hancock know they won’t have a full squad for their Scottish Cup tie at Preston Athletic.
Striker Des Sutherland will be out for at least another month with a knee injury and utility defender Scott Mackenzie is also extremely doubtful because of pulled muscles in his back.
But the management duo are not looking too far ahead as they desperately want to pick up all three points from this week’s trip to Eyemouth.
Templeton said: “ We have to go down there and win – it’s as simple as that. If we want promotion this season we need to keep picking up wins.
“Eyemouth have a tight park which will restrict us a bit but I feel we are good enough and strong enough to get a result.”
Colin Riddle, Johnny Kayser and Paul MacKay are all expected to return to the Fairydean squad for Saturday.
Gala’s game at Warner Park against Eyemouth United and Selkirk’s home clash with Gretna both kick off at 2.30pm.
