New Borders 'superclub' for ladies hockey
By Alexa Brown
LADIES HOCKEY in the Borders has been shaken up and stirred as local clubs come together to form an all-inclusive, brand new regional squad.
Borders Fjordus is the name of the new look club, created when local squads Melrose, Selkirk, Hawick and Heriot Watt joined forces.
After Selkirk were no longer able to hold on to their position in the East League due to falling numbers and the lack of a coach, it is hoped that the merge will allow the Borders to continue to enter a side into the league, as well as into the National League in which Melrose competed last year.
The National League Team will be known as Borders Fjordus 1, and the East League team as Borders Fjordus 2. As well as this there will be beginners hockey on Wednesday nights open to any adults who who wants to try the sport.
Hockey Development Officer Janet Jack, a former hockey internationalist and Olympian, said: “The new squad should help both teams as players can play at the level that is most appropriate to them.
“But there is no pressure on any of the players that come to Borders Fjordus to play in either league as perhaps they just want to come along and experience the coaching.
“Last week I went to the Heriot Watt Freshers’ Fayre and discovered lots of students who have never played hockey before but really want the opportunity to learn the game and have fun playing, and enjoy the social side of team sport.
“The club have now acknowledged the need for this ‘come and have fun’ hockey and that’s why we now have Beginners hockey on Wednesday nights.
“This is an exciting time for hockey in the Borders, and we hope the new club will offer opportunities to play hockey at every level.”
Anyone interested in joining the new squad should call Janet on 07766 056 937.
