SELKIRK'S String Jam Club welcomes back the extraordinary Anais Mitchell this week.

The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, will make her second visit to the County Hotel on Saturday.

Coming from the world of narrative folksong, poetry and balladry, Anais has been described as “the most engaging, and in some ways, most original artist currently working in the field of new American folk music” by the Independent on Sunday, and as “nothing short of incredible” in a 9/10 review in the New Musical Express.

She is held in such high regard in both her homeland, and in the UK and Europe, that she won the Best Traditional Song category at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards in 2014 and was nominated for the Best Album Award with her 'Child Ballads'.

Among her recorded work are six full-length albums, including 2010′s sensationally-reviewed 'Hadestown' - a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth.

Her 2012 album 'Young Man in America' was considered to be another masterpiece and made it onto many 'Best of 2012' lists in the national and international press, including Mojo, Uncut, The Independent, NPR and the Wall Street Journal. This was music of rare boldness and reach, genre-defying, and “a marvel from start to finish” according to the BBC.

String Jam promoter Allie Fox told us: "If there’s a common thread in Mitchell’s work - from her earliest acoustic records, to the opera, to this new chapter - it’s that she’s as interested in the world around her as the one inside her.

"Fearlessly emotive, her songwriting is direct and exquisite, the lyrics beautifully crafted and deft, the melodies memorable and always capturing the depth of the songs."

Anais raised the roof at a packed-out String Jam Club in 2014 with her wonderfully disarming and engaging live performance.

And the club is expecting the same on Saturday evening.

As an added bonus, her support act is the outstanding BBC Young Folk Musician Award winner Jarlath Henderson.

Advance booking is trongly recommended for what will undoubtedly be a popular night and one of the club highlights of the year.

Doors open 7.30 pm. Tickets can be booked by phone and collect on the night 01750-721233.
