SELKIRK'S String Jam Club is giving music lovers the perfect gift this Christmas - a Mary Coughlin concert.

Soon to begin its 20th year and voted the second best gig in the whole of the UK by The Guardian, the famous club in the County Hotel stages its very special annual end of year Christmas event in true style.

On Saturday, December 10, Ireland’s greatest internationally-acclaimed female singer comes to the popular venue.

Promoter Allie Fox told us: "Mary is the equivalent of Irish vocal royalty with a career spanning over 30 years.

"She is a legend, a word not to be used lightly, but in this case entirely appropriate."

Mary has been hailed as Ireland's Billie Holiday. Whether into folk, blues or jazz, no one can fail to be moved by the emotional depth, expression and power in a voice forged from an extraordinary life.

Overcoming childhood trauma, near-death from alcoholism and drug addiction, she has carved out a timeless and highly regarded career.

Her ability to connect emotionally and empathically with both the song and her audience is testament to her inner strength.

The stage is her home. To hear Mary sing is to be at the core of the human heart.

Allie added: "Since her first album, Tired and Emotional, rocketed her to overnight fame in 1985, she has recorded 15 further albums, not only of her own songs, but also highly-praised interpretations of Billie Holiday and compilations.

"Mary live is in a league of her own and always has been."

Born in Galway 60 years ago, Mary’s live performances resonate with authenticity and honesty, her husky voice pulling every ounce of emotion from the music.

Renowned for her frank songs, forthright opinions and championing of women’s rights, Mary is a woman of heart and soul.
