THE man behind the wheel of a timber lorry which led to the A7 being blocked for three hours near Heriot has been charged by police.
Just after 6.30am on Monday the fully loaded articulated lorry lost control on tight bends just a few hundred yards north of the village.
Around 28 tonnes of timber was spilled onto the carriageway.
One eye witness told the Border Telegraph: "We arrived just minutes after the crash happened - it was very lucky nobody was hurt."
Another driver just behind the lorry was local MP and Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore.
The clean-up operation and vehicle recovery took until mid-morning - leaving hundreds of commuters with a lengthy detour.
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "A 52-year-old male was charged with a contravention of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
