IT is the biggest killer of young people in Scotland. Last year, a total of 18 people in the Borders committed suicide. Now a campaign has been launched to save lives.

A series of roadshows are being held throughout the region to raise awareness of the support available for anyone having suicidal thoughts.

It will visit the Fresh Start (SAMH) offices in Island Street, Galashiels, during Suicide Prevention Week on Thursday, September 13, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

And it will culminate with a sponsored walk around Galashiels on Saturday, September 15.

The Hopeful Steps walk will set off from New Horizons at 10b Galabank Mill in Galashiels at 9.30am and follow a five mile circular route which takes in the Chain Bridge in Melrose.

John Raine, Chair of NHS Borders said: "Every suicide is a tragic loss of life, but we all have a role to play in suicide prevention. Only by working together can we support those struggling with suicidal thoughts to reach out and obtain the help they need."
