A GRIEVING widow has praised her local community for helping her in her time of need.

Lizzy Weir, from Galashiels, was on holiday in Gran Canaria with her husband Malky to celebrate his 50th birthday when he was killed in a tragic accident.

And she revealed she faced a bill of £4500 to bring the doting dad home.

But, in a remarkable show of generosity, the local community rallied round and, within two hours of an online fund being set up in support of the devastated family, raised £4765.

Posting on her page on social-networking site Facebook as the total topped £6000, Lizzy said: “We are so humbled by the support and donations given by all to bring Malky home. The generosity has blown me away, to know that he’s definitely coming home soon. Thank you so much everyone of you, he would be so proud.”

The Foreign Office confirmed it was liaising with the tour operator who are providing support to the family.

Lizzy explained: “The insurance company are saying he probably won’t be covered and won’t get home for less than 4500. I work 16 hours a week on minimum wage and have just lost my husband, how am I going to fund this? All I want is him home with us. I can’t handle the thought of him being there on his own. I want this nightmare to be over.”
