TWO Hawick men have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a crash which claimed the life of a teenage footballer.

Eighteen-year-old Dale Whillans, also from Hawick, was a passenger in a black Seat which left the road and landed in a field on the afternoon of Easter Monday.

He died from his injuries in Edinburgh's Western General Hospital three days later.

Ryan Moor, 25, and 19-year-old Aaron Murphy, have made a private appearance at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

They are both charged with causing death by dangerous driving under Section One of the 1988 Road Traffic Act on the A698 road between Hawick and Kelso at Timpendean on Monday, April 6.

The pair made no plea or declaration and their cases were continued for further examination.

Moor and Murphy were released on bail and their next court appearance date has yet to be confirmed.

Dale played for local amateur side Hawick Legion and a charity football match in his memory in May raised more than £6,000.

The proceeds were to be used to buy a memorial bench in Hawick's Wilton Park, to allow his family to travel to New Zealand to spread Dale's ashes and to set up a charity to help youth football in the town.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Hawick Legion described him as a "very popular lad who always had a smile on his face."
