TWO major charities in the Borders have benefited to the tune of £2,000 following this year's motorcycle cavalcade in memory of superbike champion Steve Hislop.

The 13th annual Hizzy Run attracted hundreds of bikers from throughout Britain last month.

The run had been dedicated to Steve's friend Dot Haig from Jedburgh who passed away earlier this year.

She said the team at the MacMillan Centre at Borders General Hospital "was like a second family."

As a result cheques for £1,000 each were handed over to the Cancer Centre at the BGH and also the Margaet Kerr Unit.

This year's run took motorcyclists from Steve's home village of Denholm up to Gifford and Carfraemill and finished at Denholm with street collections taking place in Jedburgh and Hawick.

Annabel Howell, Lead Cancer Clinician at the BGH said: “This money will be used to fund the extras that make a difficult time for other people that bit easier."

Run organiser Wendy Oliver said:“We would like to thank everyone for their help on the day to support a worthwhile cause.

"Dot and Steve would be very proud.

Hizzy  - who won the Isle of Man TT 11 times as well as the British Superbike Championship in 1995 and 2002 - died in a helicopter crash near Hawick in 2003 aged 41.

A statute in his memory was erected in Hawick's Wilton Lodge Park.
