THE Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, Captain the Honourable Gerald Maitland-Carew, has presented the British Empire Medal (BEM) to Joyce Wright of Selkirk for service to cancer research.

Mrs Wright has provided more than 25 years of voluntary service to Cancer Research UK, joining the local committee following the death of her father George from cancer in 1987.

Mrs Wright went on to organise a fundraising walk in his memory.

The walk became an annual event and has raised more than £140,000 since 1989.

The Lord Lieutenant said: "Mrs Wright richly deserves the British Empire Medal, not only for her important work with the local cancer committee in raising substantial sums of money but also for the many years she has helped the youngsters of Selkirk both in sport and learning the history and traditions of the Royal and ancient Burgh.”

Mrs Wright was presented with the BEM at a ceremony at Scottish Borders Council Headquarters last Thursday.
