TRIBUTES are being paid to a soldier from the Borders who was killed while serving with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan.
Alec Lucas, from Peebles, died in November 2008 following an explosion while on patrol in Helmand province.
The 24-year-old was a talented footballer and played for several local teams, including Border Amateur League side Leithen Rovers.
Since his death his family and friends have organised a fundraising football tournament in his honour.
Since the Alec Lucas Memorial Trust was formed in the months after his death it has raised thousands of pounds for marines' charities as well as the support and promotion of local grassroots football.
Paying tribute, a statement on the Leithen Rovers AFC Facebook page said: "Seven years ago today we sadly lost Alec Lucas. Those who were lucky enough to have known Alec remember him fondly and will forever miss him. Our thoughts go out to Alec's family, friends and colleagues in the Royal Marines. With sympathy from all at Leithen Rovers AFC."
