DRIVERS in Hawick and Jedburgh, and surrounding areas, are being advised by Police Scotland not to drive AT ALL as flooding has once again brought widespread disruption to the Borders this morning.

The Met Office has issued "be aware warnings" for today and Friday, as heavy rain and high winds from Storm Jonas continue to batter the country.

A number of roads across the region have been closed and there are reports that a driver has had to be rescued in Hawick by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Due to concerns for properties in Hawick and Jedburgh, two rest centres have been established in Teviotdale Leisure Centre in Hawick and Jedburgh Town Hall, with residents in affected areas being advised to evacuate.

In Hawick, residents in Commercial Road, Mansfield Road, Duke Street, Teviot Crescent, Noble Place, Buccleuch Street, Sandbed and the Haugh are advised to move their vehicles and take precautions to protect their properties.

All footbridges in Hawick have also been closed - and police strongly urge people not to attempt to cross these.

Hawick Health Centre at Teviot Road has shut its doors and all appointments for today are cancelled.

Commenting on today's severe weather in the Scottish Borders, local MSP John Lamont said:“It is terrible to see rivers rising yet again so close to homes and businesses affected so recently by flooding.

“I have already been contacted by a number of constituents, but I would urge anyone who is having difficulty making an application for help to get in touch.

“While residents in Hawick wait patiently for a new flood defence scheme, in the shorter term I hope we can now look closely at more immediate measures like dredging of local rivers which have been affected by flooding.

"I have written to SEPA to urge them to consider this as a matter of urgency. This would be a relatively quick measure which could make flooding less likely to happen in the immediate future.”
