A NEW shop in Galashiels aims to make life easier for pensioners and people with disability issues.

Handy Crafts on Channel Street was officially opened by MSP Christine Grahame last week.

Owner Alexis Shillinglaw said the store will be offering a pick-up & delivery service for alterations within a three mile radius of the shop.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph, she said: “This is a first for Galashiels, as far as I am aware.

“The service is available to everyone, but could be really beneficial for elderly or disabled people who can't get out to the shops. Lack of mobility or even just the weather can often prevent them from coming out. Now, we will go to them.”

For a minimum order of £15, items will be collected directly from the customer's door and then returned within an agreed period. Alterations to hems in trousers, skirts and other adjustments will be completed at the store.

“We are running it as a pilot scheme at the moment,” said Alexis. “Hopefully, the demand is there to make this a long-term option for people.”

The new venture has been a genuine family collaboration, with husband David and son John all chipping in to get the store going. Alexis said: “David works full-time but made a huge effort to help me with the shop including helping me with research. John has helped support me in the preparation of flyers and business cards with also setting my sage account up. I cannot thank them and the rest of my family enough.”

As well as alterations, the store will also offer dressmaking services, soft furnishings, design and manufacturing of Irish Dancing costumes and a selection of Alexis' own water & oil paintings.

At the launch last week, MSP Christine Grahame said: “It is great to see another shop in Galashiels opening. I have huge regard for our small businesses and I know the effort Alexis and her family have gone to to get this project off the ground. I wish her every success.”
