DRIVERS in the Borders are being warned about a man flagging down passing motorists and asking for petrol money.
Yesterday (Thursday) Police Scotland received two calls about a male flagging down cars - the first in the Melrose area and the second in the Coldstream area.
The male is described as having dark hair, smartly dressed wearing, shirt and blazer, driving a dark car, possibly a BMW.
Both callers believed this behaviour to be suspicious. This behaviour is similar to scams detailed across the UK where scammers claim they urgently need money for petrol and on some occasions they offer jewellery (which is worthless) in exchange for money.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "If anything like this happens to you, politely close your window and continue on your journey.
"If possible take note of the cars registration. When you are safely away from the situation contact the police via 101. If you feel threatened at anytime in anyway contact the police immediately on 999.
