BORDERERS are being urged to take care after a Yellow (Be Aware) warning for snow was issued for the majority of the region.

A band of rain and snow is expected this afternoon with easterly winds leading to potential drifting and difficult driving conditions in blizzards.   This is followed by a Yellow Warning for persistent and at times heavy snow, starting at 12.05am tomorrow (Friday, April 29) until 3pm on the same day.

By Friday morning, accumulations of 5 to 10cm centimetres are likely above about 100 metres, with 15cm or more possible above 200m.

At lower levels and near coasts a mix of rain and snow is expected, bringing the risk of standing water on roads.   Commuters are being advised to be aware of the risk of dangerous driving conditions and disruption to transport.

Scottish Borders Council have said they will continue to monitor the situation, with its gritting fleet in operation from 6pm tonight and from 6am tomorrow morning.

Jim Fraser, SBC’s Emergency Planning Officer, said: “Despite being only a couple of days from May, the information we have from the Met Office is that the majority of the Borders will be affected by snow through this evening and tomorrow.

“Commuters should expect disruption across the region’s road network, with the Met Office warning us of potential for drifting snow and blizzard conditions for drivers.

“I would remind residents to drive with care and keep up to date with what is happening weather-wise across the Borders.”

School pupils are on holiday tomorrow due to a staff in-service day.
