IT began as a surprise for a local doctor's 50th birthday.

Now, two years on, organisers hope the Magic 50 Sportive will put Selkirk on the road cycling map.

The town hosted the Orbea Borders Bike Festival at the weekend where just under 500 mountain bikers took part in three races around the Royal Burgh.

And further plans are afoot to attract funding for the creation of designated cycling routes into the Yarrow and Ettrick valleys.

But road cycling is also growing in popularity once again.

Sheila Cochrane from the Magic 50 Sportive organising committee told us: "We are trying to promote cycling around Selkirk and have gathered quite a bit of support.

"Two years ago we created a surprise sportive for Dr Jeff Cullen's 50th birthday and called it the Magic 50 with a 50 mile route and invited 50 people. "It was a great day and we felt we could open it up to everyone and make it an annual event."

Sunday's Magic 50 will also have a tremendous 23 option as well.

The 50 mile ride leaves Selkirk Rugby Club at 11am taking in Yarrow, Roberton, Ashkirk and Ettrick with a special loop around Newark Tower.

The 23 mile route also leaves the rugby club and takes in the Yarrow and Ettrick valleys.

Sheila added: "The forecast for the weekend is good and the scenery on both routes is fantastic.

"The Magic Sportive is all about enjoyment, but with some testing climbs for the adrenalin junkies. If you’ve never done a Sportive before, this is the perfect opportunity to have a go, in a relaxed atmosphere.

"This event is open to anyone who enjoys cycling - we'd be really happy to see you."

Registration takes place at Selkirk Rugby Club from 10.15am with entries costing only £10.

Refreshments will be available at the end of both sportives.
