A TERRIFIED woman had to gallop her pony for three miles near Melrose on Thursday to escape from a chasing dog.

Police are now trying to trace the owner of the animal, which is believed to be a rottweiler.

The frightening encounter started at around 6.30pm on Thursday as the woman exercised her young horse near Gattonside.

But an aggressive rottweiler broke free from its owner and charged at the pony.

Fearing for the welfare of her pony the women galloped in the direction of Gattonside Mains Farm in an effort to lose the dog.

But the hound continued the chase for around three miles before eventually giving up.

Inspector John Scott said: “This was a frightening experience for someone to go through and dog owners must be aware of their responsibilities when taking their pets into rural areas.

“The chase began in a spot particularly popular with walkers as well as dog owners and I would be interested to speak with anyone who was in the area around this time.

“I also urge the owner of this dog to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
