LOWOOD Bridge will be closed for two days whilst vital inspection works are carried out on the 250 year old structure.

The B-listed bridge, near Melrose, will be closed on Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3, between 9.30am and 4pm.

The closure is needed to allow a large mobile platform to be used by structural engineers to access all areas of the bridge, which will mean a detailed assessment of the bridge’s current condition can be made.

Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Member for Roads and Infrastructure, Councillor Gordon Edgar, said: “It is important the council can fully inspect the bridge to discover its current condition. From that, the Council can make an informed decision on whether remedial work is needed.

“The Council apologises to the public for the closure, but we have recognised this is a well-used route and have kept the bridge open during busier commuter times in the morning and evening.”
